Carol, thanks for commenting. I think she just misspoke about a working station, but your thought that losing the historic designation would allow the Town of Christiansburg to bring in a higher density retail environment is an interesting one. I shudder to think that residents would allow it to happen, but stranger things have occurred!

Just wondering what working train station Jaclyn is referring to. There are two depots located there. One is in the national register of historic places and is privately owned. The other is offices and storage for the railroad. We really don’t have a ‘working’ train station in the area.
Historic Districts increase the value of surrounding homes, when you do something to decrease the value of the district, not only do you lower adjacent property values (having a negative affect on tax revenue) but you run the risk of losing the designation as a historic district. Maybe that’s what town government really wants. Lose the Historic District designation then you can tear everything down and put in swimsuit shops, hotels, and restaurants within walking distance of the Aquatic Center.

Jaclyn, I don’t know that townhomes wouldn’t sell there, but I think you’re on to something – I don’t know that there’s a real draw to living IN Cambria right now. It’s said that retail follows residential, so where the people live, the businesses will follow. Maybe that’s the key, that we need to provide housing options there first?

Maybe I’m missing something here, but…
Does Trejbal really expect “denser, upscale housing” to sell near a working train station??? (Not that I’m for more townhouses in Christiansburg.) But is there any real draw to living there yet? Probably not, so maybe lower income housing is the only way to go. Personally, I’d much prefer more shops, etc.

Steven – I’ve not had any dealings with Brad, but I’ve heard some good things about him. Maybe we could get an interview with him sometime, get his thoughts on the direction of Christiansburg.

I think Brad Stipes is a very effective councilman. If he sees progress in controlling something so that something else happens, then I’m ok with that.
